You can take two main routes from San Jose to the Osa Peninsula; the newly built Pacific Coastal Highway or the Inter American Highway.
The villages and towns off the Pacific Coastal Highway are your chance to see the locals living alongside such exotic wildlife as scarlet macaws and monkeys. An interesting prelude to the wilder climes of the Osa. The Inter American Highway trails through the heart of the country and has a more mountainous landscape. Chirripo National Park, just past the city of Cartago, contains Cirro Chirripo, the highest peak in Costa Rica.
The popular town of Domincal lies on the halfway point between both routes. Once a Mecca for young surfers, it has fast evolved into a vibrant town for all pockets. Along its beach front are some of the best sea food restaurants in the country and a number of Costa Rica resorts and cheap Costa Rica hotels.
Both routes are excellent opportunities to tour Costa Rica, but please take into consideration the bad condition of some of the minor roads. They can make the journey very hard going. If you plan to take one of our three or four day hikes, we recommend you take a plane so to arrive fresh for your jungle hike.
