| Q: What is the weather like?
A: The temperature on the Osa is fairly consistent year round ranging from 72°F (20°C) at night to 88°F (30°C) during the day. The driest period is between December and April. The period between May and September experiences afternoon showers which has a cooling affect and activates the wildlife, surely one of the best times to visit. October is the wettest month, seeing nearly consistent downpours.
Q: What should I bring? A: Here is a list of recommended items: shorts, lightweight pants, sweater for cooler climes (i.e. San Jose), several shirts: both short and long sleeved, synthetic socks if much hiking is planned, sturdy hiking boots, sandals, passport and several copies in case you lose it, money belt, dollar currency, credit card, all necessary medications, toiletries, sun block, insect repellant, rain poncho, wide-brimmed hat, camera and lots of film, humility and a sense of humor as the adventure is about to begin!
Q: What is the currency?
A: The currency is the Colon (Spanish for Christopher Columbus), however, the US dollar is readily accepted. All hotels, car rental agencies, flight operators, and tours are listed in dollars. Credit cards are often accepted, however banks charge a 6% surcharge. There may be instances when your credit or debit card will not work in the ATM machine, so, carrying sufficient funds is recommended. It’s a good idea to split up your cash into several stashes. Traveler’s checks can be used but it takes up to six weeks to clear in the bank.
Some business will not accept them for that reason.
Q: Is crime prevalent?
A: Costa Rica is a peaceful country, but, in San Jose as in other big cities theft can be a problem. It is generally petty theft and non violent, so always take the normal precautions and keep your valuables in your hotel room safe or with the front desk.
Never leave anything in your car unless you can see it.
Ticos (Costa Ricans) are gentle people, but, when they get into a car something changes them into maniacs, so always drive defensibly.
